Sirens

Beautiful, Contemporary Sounds

Presented by Halcyon
in association with CarriageWorks

Sirens, Halcyon’s first concert for 2010, features the combined talents of five exceptional solo artists - sopranos Alison Morgan and Belinda Mongomery, mezzo sopranos Jenny Duck-Chong and Jo Burton and harpist Genevieve Lang - in a entrancing blend of four female voices and harp.

Since their first performance together in Halcyon’s 2004 concert series, they have appeared together regularly at festivals, in concert and on ABC Classic FM and toured with Musica Viva Countrywide.

At the 2007 Classical Music Awards, they gave a performance of Graham Hair’s O Venezia that 'left the audience breathless and most likely with goosebumps'.

Sirens features the world premiere of a new commission by Sydney composer Raffaele Marcellino, A Strange Kind of Paradise. Marcellino says this about the work: This work, along with a series of songs, inspired by the cycle of labyrinth myths. One of the principal figures in these myths was Ariadne, daughter of Minos, spurned lover of Theseus and finally wife of Dionysis. The text for this work utilises a poem, 'Ariadne's Lament' by Jordie Albiston interpolated with text and music from Monteverdi's surviving Lamento d'Arianna. It is about abandonment, the contemplation of solitude and longing.

Other works include the Sydney premiere of the complete version of Dan Walker’s King Ludwig’s Swans (2004/09) and Kerry Andrew’s ojo (2004/7) and the Australian premiere of Roxanna Panufnik’s The Spirit of the Saints (2007).
