XENAKIS AND REICH | PRESENTED BY SYNERGY PERCUSSION AND CARRIAGEWORKS Synergy Percussion, Australia's premier percussion ensemble over the last four decades, explodes back onto the Sydney music scene in 2008 with music from two of the greatest composers to have appeared in the final years of the 20th century. The late Iannis Xenakis composed music of great power and character. Using sweeping rhythms and monumentally constructed sound-blocks, his music evokes an ancient sense of ritual and an ageless beauty. Steve Reich has been described as one of the few composers to have altered the direction of musical history. Using slowly changing melodic and rhythmic grooves, his work is both hypnotic and uplifting. DATES 23, 24 & 26 APRIL |

SALOME – IN COGNITO | PRESENTED BY THE RABBLE AND CARRIAGEWORKS After the success of Corvus, The Rabble return to CarriageWorks with Salome – In Cogito Volume III. The Rabble drastically re-imagine the story of Salome and her part in the beheading of John the Baptist. Plague, drought and perversity have swept a small Australian town, leaving its citizens intoxicated and feverish. Salome, the belle of the town, has not escaped the infection. A groomless, bed wetting, albino bride, Salome rampantly pursues John - a German-speaking prisoner and an occasional paraplegic. In a town with no water and tormented by her hedonist father and drag-queen mother, Salome is very, very thirsty. Influenced by Wilde, Caravaggio and Castelucci, The Rabble have created a grotesque and surreal visual theatre. Salome drips with taboo, sex and the sublime. |
